The Little Prince

Mami and Momo commented on the difference between the way children and adults perceive appearances.

Grown-ups don’t believe the man who looks strange. They tend to mind appearances. In this story, Turkish astronomer, who had made a formal demonstration of his discovery at the Congress, but no one had believed him because of his strange clothes. Then, he showed his demonstration again, wearing a very elegant suit and everyone believed him. So, the appearance is important for grown-ups.

First appearance is also important for grown ups. On page 1, there is a picture of a hat. If grown-ups know it’s not hat, but elephant and boa constrictor, they can’t accept and change the mind. They don’t change that impression easily.

On the other hand, children don’t mind about appearance. However, recently, children also mind appearance, for example, fashion, cosmetic, another sex person. Maybe, they are influenced by grown ups. What do you think?

    I’m interesed in this comment.
Grown-ups are judged whether their impression is good or bad from their appearance by the society.
It is certain that recently the children have been influenced by grown-ups on the side of appearance, but I think they are not so influenced on the side of their own mind. My opinion is that even if their appearance became better, child thinking does not change.

I think so.Also media like TV and the magazine has a strong effect on children. Even if children wear the clothing in untidy eay, they are allowed because thay are just children. But there is a norm that it is natural for adult to wear the clothing in tidy way.

I think children are influenced by grown-ups.Children learn both good and bad things from grown-ups and imitate them, so they just imitate grown-ups’ fashion and cosmetic because of longing for adults. Therefore, I also think the mind of child don’t change so much.

Even if children are highly influenced by our own grown-up world, don’t you think they still carry a naiveness and a straightforwardness typical from kids? Don’t they still ask questions that astound us in their simplicity and wittiness?

I thought it was really interesting how our perception of the world is so different. I asked my 7-year old boy about the picture on the first page reading until before the part the author reveals what it is. Guess what his natural answer was?
