The drunkard

There is a drunkard in this book.  He drank a lot to forget something ashames, and we were very interested in that, so we discussed about it.  We sometimes see this kind of adult.  Why do they drink instead of other activity to forget something?

Mami said it is easy to do because they drink while eating, and eating is our habit.  Moreover, they are busy so they have no time do do sports.  Azusa said they drink alone a home, not outside.

Then, what do you think about this?

  1.   Ayumi Says:

I think because the drunkard didn’t have someone who has close relationship. If people don’t have anyone who are friends or family, they can’t talk anything. So this drunkard also didn’t have these kind of people. He maybe had many things to talk to somebody, but in real he had no friend who listen his talking. So he had only way to drink alot to forget, I think.

  2.   Azusa Says:

I have the same opinion to Ayumi. If he has real friends who care for, listen to and understand his sadness, he does’t have to drink so much. To drink is the only method to forget something painful.

  3.   Saori Says:

I think alcohol is sort of medicine so if they once drink of it they totally can forget all of the bad things. I think the alcohol is the only thing to relieve him. From this point, my opinion is similar to Ayumi and Azusa.

  4.   Kaori Says:

I agree with three persons because I also think the drunkard
don’t have friend who listen to his problem, so drinking is
easy way and only way for him to forget something and to relieve stress.

  5.   Akimi Says:

I have a similar opinion to Saori.
When people drink alcohol, they become funny, and easy to forget something.
I think it’s kind of ridicurous but I also think they can’t live without doing so.
That’s why some adults rely on alcohol.

  6.   Marina Says:

I think drinking alcohol is a kind of the way to foreget something bad. The drunkard may have some stress. When I drink some alcohol, I feel comfortable happy, so people relay on drinking alcohol.

  7.   Ayaka Says:

I also think alcohol makes people happy. When bad things happen and people feel sad, they want to forget them even if it is just a little. It’s better that bad feeling becomes soften a little bit. That’s why people drink alcohol.

Most of you say that the drunkard keeps drinking because he feels lonely and doesn’t have friends, right? How about the many alcoholic who have families, friends, and still drink, causing so much suffering for the ones around him/her?

Don’t you think that the author wants to show us something bigger about our own addiction? Isn’t the drunkard just exemplifying our lonely addictive lives? Doesn’t an addiction hide something else than loneliness?

I’d love to hear more from you on the topic.
